DIY Color-Coding Keys and Padlocks

Maybe the roommate walked in, maybe your sub has to itch their nose- whatever your level of emergency, matching keys with their appropriate locks is really important. Many of us fall in love with one style of lock and buy a bunch of them- which is fine, except that they are completely identical.

I did some research to find a solution to this problem, and as it turns out, the answer lies with mod podge. (It's sort of the duct tape of the crafting world, am I right?) This tutorial is super easy, fancy when finished, and adds a little extra safety to your kinky time.

Materials and Tools:

  • Padlock

  • Brush (for applying glue)

  • Scissors or exacto knife

  • Pencil/ pen

  • Mod Podge

  • Fancy paper (I used decorative paper, I've seen this done with origami paper as well)

The Process:

1. Trace the lock and key head on the paper. Make sure to get ask close as possible, as you want it to fit pretty precisely.Cut out your traced pieces.

2. Apply mod podge to the key and padlock. I'm sure this goes without saying, but be careful not to smear any in the locking mechanism/ grooves of the key.

3. Apply decorative paper, pressing firmly as you go. Be sure to scrape off any extra mod podge, as some will ooze out the sides.

4. Apply even more mod podge to the outside. This will seal the edges and make it durable.

5. Let dry.

That's all there is to it. Not only are they pretty, but they're extra safe! (If you can't tell, we're big on safety here.)

Until next week, feel free to check out our social media for kinky/crafty memes. Have fun, kinksters!
